A multimillion-pound proposal by Network Rail to transform London’s Liverpool Street station includes vertical transportation (VT), specifically, eight new lifts and six new escalators, the Independent reports. Britain’s busiest station, Liverpool Street dates to 1875 and serves more than 118 million passengers a year. Network Rail aims to make it a “landmark gateway to the City of London” that can accommodate more than 200 million passengers annually. Step-free access, new VT and restrooms topped the list of priorities based on a public consultation that drew approximately 2,000 responses. Also on the drawing board are new retail, leisure and workspaces, better signage, a new roof in line with the original Victorian design and a dog-friendly area. Scheme architect ACME will “respect and retain the station’s Victorian features, including the iconic train shed and the Great Eastern Hotel,” according to Network Rail Property Director Robin Dobson. Funding, according to Network Rail, would come from private sector partnerships and revenue from new office spaces.
