Illinois’ Colley Elevator: Elevator Code Change is Coming

Bensenville, Illinois-headquartered Colley Elevator Co. reminds customers in its August newsletter that the elevator safety code is changing for the state of Illinois (excluding the city of Chicago), with the biggest change on the horizon being door lock monitoring (DLM). When Illinois adopts A17.1-2022, the code as written will require DLM on elevators permitted for installation or modernization after January 1, 2026. It will require DLM on all elevators by January 1, 2029, with no provision for grandfathering in older equipment. Changes to inspection procedures will include DLM testing, which could impact inspection fees. Adoption of the code is “extremely important for everyone that has an interest in elevators, as it changes the way we test elevators and may force buildings to modernize older systems,” Colley stated.
