Latest Karachi Elevator Accident Points to Larger Issue
The collapse of an elevator on October 16 at a private hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, in which five people were injured, points to a larger issue of frequent elevator-related accidents in Pakistan’s largest city, Pakistan Today is among outlets to report. In the latest incident, rescue teams arrived quickly at the scene and transported the injured passengers, who included women, to a hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether it was the same hospital where the elevator incident occurred. Previous elevator accidents in Karachi include a similar event that happened on March 24 where an elevator cable snapped due to overloading at a factory, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man. On February 25, several government officials “narrowly avoided injury” when another hospital elevator carrying more than 15 people fell from the fourth to the first floor. Authorities have said poor maintenance and overcrowding of elevators are at least partly to blame.
