CabSafe Passenger-Detection System Certified by Liftinstituut

In light of updated North American elevator code incorporating a requirement that approaching passengers be detected, Swiss sensor company CEDES developed its CabSafeTM system, which was recently certified by third-party witness Liftinstituut, Liftinstituut announced. CEDES Elevator and Escalator Product Manager Manfred Stein said the company investigated different technologies — including 3D light curtains and radar sensors — before settling on CabSafe, which is a Time of Flight (ToF) camera that consists of a controller, a 2D light curtain and a 3D ToF sensor. It supports left-, right- and center-opening elevator applications, regardless of door panel thickness or gaps. Liftinstituut experts saw CabSafe in person, but witness testing took place virtually because of COVID-19. ANSI A17.1/CSA B44-19 now include the passenger-detection requirement, but, since individual U.S. states determine their own timeframes for introducing new code requirements, “it may be some time before you can see our system everywhere,” Stein said.
