Otis Worldwide Corp. announced the winning student teams for its second annual Made to Move CommunitiesTM challenge, in which Otis volunteers mentored students to use their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to devise mobility solutions for the aging population. Concepts ranged from smart escalators to connected wheelchairs. This year’s program included 20 schools across 14 countries and territories, an increase from last year’s nine countries and territories. Announced on April 14 as part of Otis’ annual Lift Our Communities Month celebration, the winners in each Otis region are: Americas: Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos Industrial y de Servicios No. 33 in Mexico City; a portable bath to help prevent bathroom falls; Europe, the Middle East and Africa: GEMS Wellington Academy in Dubai; a connected, motorized wheelchair to help senior citizens navigate Dubai’s shopping malls; Asia Pacific: Institute of Technical Education, Singapore; a motorized piece of equipment that mimics caregivers’ actions; China: Nanchang University, Nanchang; a smart escalator that identifies passengers in wheelchairs and adjusts its steps to create a stable, moving platform. Later this year, Otis plans to launch its third annual Made to Move Communities challenge.
