The Himalaya foot overbridge (FoB) at the historic Chhatrapatti Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai will get an escalator, mid-day reports. The FoB collapsed in March 2019, resulting in seven fatalities. Since then, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has gone back and forth about an escalator, especially in light of an audit finding that close to 50,000 passengers use the bridge each day. Work to rebuild the FoB, sans escalator, has been underway since summer 2021, but underground utilities and unavailability of land have delayed the project. With work now approximately 50% complete, BMC has decided to add an escalator, not only at CSMT, but at “all new bridges, where possible,” according to BMC Chief of Bridges Satish Thosar.
