A collaborative effort with both PT BNP (Bina Nusa Properti) and Karang Dawa Traditional Banjar in Bunga Mekar Village, named as authorized holders of a construction permit, will bring a glass elevator and viewing platform to Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Bali, The Bali Sun reports. The beach can currently only be accessed via a steep, 300-m walkway with uneven steps that are eroding under the pressure of an ever-growing number of tourists walking up and down. Plans suggest that the glass elevator and viewing platform will incorporate an outdoor, glass-walled elevator transporting tourists from the top of the cliff at Kelingking Beach 182 m down to the beach below. It’s reported that there will be photo spots every 20 m; at one such stop, a 64-m viewing bridge will also be built for a more panoramic view. Officials said the investment value of the construction will be IDR 200 billion (US$13.4 million). The ceremonial laying of the first stone has taken place, and construction will begin soon. Between 1,500 and 1,900 tourists visit Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan every day, with more visiting on weekends.
