The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced that the replacement of the escalators at the Silver Spring station in Maryland is nearly complete, Source of the Spring reports. The agency indicated on social media that the final escalator replacement at the station is underway. Work began in 2022 on the north entrance between East-West Highway and Second Avenue in downtown Silver Spring, followed by the replacement of the three escalators at the south entrance. The replacement process, managed by KONE, was originally expected to take approximately 11 months. This project is part of WMATA’s escalator replacement program, which will replace 130 escalators across 32 stations by the year 2028.
