Eight transit systems in eight states will receive a total of US$353 million in federal funding to make rail stations more accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by adding elevators, ramps and more, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced on May 28. Funds are being awarded through the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP), part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Upgrades will also include renovating platforms to make them level, improving signage and enhancing audio and video systems. Among the selected ASAP projects are the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which will receive US$156.5 million; the Greater Cleaveland Transit Authority in Ohio, which will receive US$16 million; and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which will receive approximately US$4.7 million.
