East Indian State of Bihar Makes Registration of VT Mandatory

The bill was proposed by BSPHCL.

The east Indian state of Bihar made registration and inspection of vertical-transportation (VT) equipment mandatory on July 12, with the State Cabinet approving the Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill proposed by Bihar State Power Holding Co. Ltd. (BSPHCL), The Times of India is among outlets to report. The measure regulates the use of lifts and escalators in multistory buildings, commercial complexes, hospitals, offices and hotels. Registration and inspection of elevators and escalators must now occur at least once every three years. Noting that construction of multistory buildings is on the rise in Bihar, BSPHCL Principal Secretary Sanjeev Hans said that “regulating the proper operation of these machines and equipment from a safety perspective has become necessary to prevent any safety lapses and ensure the availability of automated rescue devices.”
