Istanbul based companies took the lion’s share from Turkey’s 169.5 billion dollars of export of last year, which totaled 39.3%.
Based on the data obtained from Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), 66.7 billion dollars of products, ranging from textile to garment industry, from automotive to fruits and vegetables, from jewelry to defense industry, in 27 different sectors have been exported to 238 countries and regions.
In 2009, 70 billion dollars of products were exported. There was an annual decline of 4.8% in export figures, due to the pandemic.
Garment Industry is the Export Leader
Garment industry has been the leader in export figures in 2020 among Istanbul based companies, for a share of 17.1%. Export volume of Istanbul based companies active in garment industry decreased to 11 billion, 398 million dollars, for a decrease of 6.8%, in 2019. Despite the decrease, the garment industry maintained its leadership in exports from İstanbul.
At the same period of time, following the garment industry, export volume of chemical materials and products was 9 billion, 706 million dollars, and export volume of steel industry was 6 billion, 654 million dollars.
From Istanbul, 5.7 billion dollars of electric and electronic products, 5.3 billion dollars of automotive, 4.3 billion dollars of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, 3.5 billion dollars of jewelry, 3.1 billion dollars of textile, and 2.6 billion dollars machinery and components were exported. In TURKSTAT data, Elevator and Escalator Industry is classified under ‘Machine Components and Parts for Lifting, Transport and Stacking.’ For 2019 and 2020, export volume of this classification is given in the table below.
Ship and Yacht Industry Achieves the Greatest Increase in Export
Due to the pandemic, export figures of Istanbul based companies decreased in 16 industries and increased in 11 industries. The industries that increased their export volumes have been ranged as ‘ship and yach,t, ‘fresh fruits and vegetables,’ ‘defense and aviation,’ ‘fruit and vegetables,’ ‘dry fruit,’ ‘cereals,’ ‘hazelnut,’ ‘ferrous and non-ferrous metals,’ ‘cement,’ ‘furniture’ and ‘carpet.’
Among them, the industry, which increased its export figures most, has been the ship and yacht industry with an increase of 71.2%. The export volume of the ship and yacht industry, which was 466.9 million dollars in 2019, has reached 799 million dollars last year.
At the same period of time, export volume of leather and leather products in Istanbul showed the greatest decline. With a decline of 21.5%, compared to the last year, the export volume of the industry decreased to 866 million dollars from 1 billion, 104 million dollars.
The Biggest Market: Germany
The biggest market for the Istanbul based companies was Germany once again last year. Although the export volume from Istanbul to Germany showed a decline of 3.4% compared to 2019, it was still the biggest market, with an export volume of 6 billion 357.2 million dollars.
Following Germany, the biggest markets for Istanbul based companies were Britain, with 5 billion 11.8million dollars; USA, with 3 billion, 125.8 million dollars; Italy, with 2 billion, 867.6 million dollars; Spain, with 2 billion, 722.8 million dollars; France, with 2 billion, 393.4 million dollars; Israel, with 2 billion, 378.5 million dollars; and Iraq, with 2 billion, 62.2 million dollars.
During the aforementioned period, USA has been the country where Istanbul based export volume increased on amount basis, with 619.1 million dollars. USA was followed by Marshall Islands, with 165 million dollars; Azerbaijan, with 162.3 million dollars; Belgium, with 146.9 million dollars; and Hong Kong, with 121.1 million dollars. On the other hand, the companies that operate in 27 different industries in Istanbul exported their products to 238 countries and regions.
Istanbul: Export Leader in the Elevator Industry
Istanbul is still the leader in the export of Elevator, Escalator and their Components. In Istanbul, there are 536 elevator and escalator companies registered in Turkish Standards Institute, and approximately 30% of them are also component manufacturers. Buga OTİS and Wittur, which are the multinational companies that have production facilities in Istanbul, have achieved the biggest export volumes.
