Dinesh Aggarwal (DA), founder and director, and Mohit Aggarwal (MA), founder and director, Aggarwal Art and Pattern Pvt. Ltd., share insights with your author (SSP) on their conscious decision to exemplify the “Make in India” concept.
SSP: How does your company exemplify the “Make in India” concept, and was this a conscious decision?
DA & MA In 2006, when we ventured into the business, we observed a significant gap in the market. At the time, almost all decorative steel products were being imported from China, and prices were exceedingly high under the guise of “imported” goods. With our background in the metal industry, particularly in handicrafts and signage, we identified a clear need for locally produced decorative steel sheets.
What struck us most was the lack of infrastructure in India. No manufacturer could create etched designs on large steel sheets beyond a size of 1 ft x 2 ft. Understanding this, we set out to change the landscape. It was a daunting task because there were no precedents for such large-scale production in India, and we had no blueprint for how China achieved this. Yet, we took the plunge, investing everything we had into building a 4-ft x 8-ft etching plant from the ground up.
This decision wasn’t just about business; it was about pioneering something that had never been done in India. We became the first to manufacture large decorative designer steel sheets entirely in India — a significant step in promoting the “Make in India” initiative long before it became a national movement.
Initially, it was challenging. Major players in the market, primarily traders who relied on imports, did not support us. However, we took a bold decision to bypass them and sell directly to manufacturers. We worked diligently to meet all the required compliances, and within the first six months, our products started gaining traction. With the unwavering support of local manufacturers, our business grew steadily. Today, our designs dominate the market, and 99% of the back-panel series you see are our creations.
It was undoubtedly a conscious decision, not just for us but for India, as well. By choosing to manufacture domestically, we have played a key role in reducing reliance on imports and promoting Indian-made products, proving that high-quality decorative steel sheets can be made right here in India.
SSP: What are the specific advantages for the vertical-transportation (VT) industries in India? It is because they can source their decorative sheet requirements within the country itself instead of having to import them?
DA & MA When exploring the market for designer steel sheets, we noticed that only one or two importers bring these sheets into the country, and the cost is shockingly high. For example, if the original cost of a sheet is Rs. 10,000, they sell it for as much as Rs. 95,000. This extreme pricing discourages many clients from proceeding with their lift interior projects.
The advantage we offer is that we customize designs and deliver the material within a week, while imported sheets take a minimum of three months to arrive. Moreover, there’s no guarantee of receiving the same material in case of reorders. If the imported sheet is fabricated incorrectly, the entire project can be ruined.
We provide world-class interiors for the VT industry, offering a wide range of designs tailored to our clients’ needs and preferences. We have nearly all finishes and colors for designer steel sheets, and our benefits include competitive pricing, high quality, fast availability, a pan-India presence and customized designs and finishes. With all these advantages, why would our clients still need to import sheets?
SSP: How have elevator cabin interiors transformed over the years? What are recent trends in elevator cabin interiors?
DA & MA Over the past 10 to 15 years, elevator cabin interiors have undergone a significant transformation. A decade ago, there were hardly any designer cabins available in the market. Customers wanted something different, but the only options were plain powder-coated colors like orange, white and blue, with the most premium choice being a stainless-steel cabin. Some clients even used wooden panels, but they were heavy and not fire rated.
As preferences evolved, people began to demand higher-quality materials with better designs. In the last 10 years, the elevator industry has seen tremendous growth, and now, the first requirement in almost every new and old building is an elevator. The interior segment has become crucial, as clients want their elevators to match the luxury of their spaces. This is where our products excel — we offer luxurious and royal designs for elevator interiors at very competitive prices.
Whether it’s a hotel, home, villa, showroom, airport or even a government project, the demand for high-quality elevator interiors has become universal. It’s no longer just a trend; it’s a status symbol. We also offer 20 to 25% custom patterns based on the client’s preferences, including logos and branding, to provide truly personalized solutions.
SSP: What are the demands/expectations you receive from the elevator industry/OEMs for designer stainless steel sheets/complete elevator interior solutions?
DA & MA As per recent estimates, India installs approximately 55,000 to 65,000 elevators annually. The elevator market in the country has been growing rapidly, driven by urbanization, infrastructure development and an increasing number of high-rise buildings. India is one of the largest elevator markets globally, with strong demand in both residential and commercial sectors.
The demand for designer elevator cabins is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, driven by the increasing focus on aesthetics, luxury and customization across various sectors.
We have more than 1,000 clients in India alone who specialize in manufacturing designer and modern elevators. OEMs are placing significant emphasis on lift interiors, with some even establishing special divisions to modernize old elevators. Some create entire elevator cabins directly using designer sheets, while others apply cladding after the basic cabin is installed.
With branches and outlets in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, we are well-positioned to serve the market effectively. We also offer lift interior cladding services and recently completed the ITC Narmada Hotel Project using antique finish sheets. Our pan-India presence enables us to provide excellent service across the country.
SSP: What are the parameters based on when a particular stainless-steel sheet or material is selected for designing the cabin of an elevator?
DA & MA Selecting the right stainless-steel sheet or material for designing an elevator cabin involves several key parameters. The design and color should align with the overall theme and aesthetics of the environment where the elevator is installed. The choice of stainless-steel grade affects durability and corrosion resistance, while the finish — whether mirror, satin or brushed — impacts both appearance and maintenance.
Additionally, Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating options like gold, rose gold, bronze, champagne and black offer extra customization, enhancing the elevator’s visual appeal to suit various design preferences. We also provide etching patterns on stainless-steel sheets with all these finishes, allowing for intricate and personalized designs.
Our catalogue features more than 500 designs with various finishes to help clients find the perfect match for their space. Most clients are very satisfied with our catalogue designs. Furthermore, we can easily customize any design in any color and finish, including PVD coatings and etched patterns, to meet specific client preferences. This flexibility ensures that the elevator cabin not only meets functional requirements but also complements the overall aesthetic of the space.
SSP: What types of designer stainless steel sheets/elevator interior materials are in demand from your company’s product profile? Any plans to expand your product profile? If so, in what ways?
DA & MA Our company’s product profile includes a wide range of designer stainless-steel sheets and elevator interior materials that are highly in demand. We are continuously looking to expand our product profile to meet evolving market demands and customer preferences. Future plans include introducing micro linen finish sheets, honeycomb and moonrock finishes on a large scale, in comparison to traditional sheets. These new finishes will allow us to create very fine designs. We also plan to enhance our range of customizable designs and finishes, improve our PVD coating options and incorporate new trends in elevator interior design. This expansion will enable us to offer even more variety and customization, ensuring that our products not only meet functional requirements but also align with the latest design trends and client expectations.
SSP: How does it feel to be one of the leading manufacturers of designer steel sheets in India? How has the journey been so far and what are your future plans?
DA & MA Being a leading manufacturer of designer steel sheets in India is both an honor and a significant responsibility. Our journey has been rewarding, marked by pioneering large-scale etching and advanced finishes. We are committed to excelling in the Indian market before considering expansion into export markets. Our focus remains on delivering exceptional products and services domestically while preparing for future growth.
SSP: In what ways is it beneficial to have your own manufacturing unit to design and manufacturer unique stainless-steel sheets and offer complete elevator cabin interior solutions for the elevator industry?
DA & MA “Atmanirbharta” (self-sufficiency) is the guiding principle for us. It’s not just about our industry or financial gain; it’s also about contributing to our nation and our country. Having an in-house manufacturing unit offers several advantages. It ensures access to high-quality materials, availability, cost-efficiency and faster production. This combination allows us to deliver superior products more quickly and at competitive prices. Additionally, it aligns with the “vocal for local” initiative, supporting local manufacturing and reducing dependency on imports. Overall, our manufacturing unit enhances our ability to offer customized, high-quality and affordable solutions while supporting national interests.
SSP: How have your products been designed? What are the parameters considered? Are you associated with interior designers/architects or any other professionals for this?
DA & MA Our designer stainless steel sheets are crafted with close collaboration from architects and interior designers, who provide us with detailed guidance, requirements and drawings. Based on their input, we create tailored samples and miniature prototypes, including scaled-down versions of elevator cabins. These prototypes replicate the final product’s look and finish, making it easier for professionals to visualize and assess the design. This approach ensures that our products meet the precise needs of their projects, providing architects and designers with a clear preview and practical tool to enhance their work and make informed decisions before final production.
SSP: What safety and maintenance factors are considered while manufacturing, designing and installing such designer stainless steel sheets?
DA & MA Steel is highly user-friendly, particularly with fabrication machines, making it easy to work with, including our designer stainless steel sheets. These sheets are designed for ease of use, similar to regular steel. We provide detailed design diagrams to our clients if needed, which help them in constructing their elevator cabins seamlessly. The installation and fabrication process follow the same steps as for any standard cabin. Additionally, our specialized team offers guidance to new manufacturers, addressing any doubts during fabrication or installation. Maintenance is straightforward and simple, ensuring long-term durability and ease of upkeep.
SSP: What are your views on the growth of designer elevator cabins in the coming years? Which sectors demand such designer sheets for their elevator cabins?
DA & MA The demand for designer elevator cabins is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, driven by the increasing focus on aesthetics, luxury and customization across various sectors. Sectors such as commercial spaces, luxury residential complexes, retail outlets and high-end hotels are seeing the most demand for such designer stainless steel sheets. As these sectors focus more on creating unique and stylish interiors, designer elevator cabins play a crucial role in enhancing the overall look and feel of buildings. The trend toward modernization and personalization will likely continue, with businesses and homeowners alike opting for bespoke designs to reflect their brand or lifestyle.
