Transformers and Game Changers

Technology is an integral part of our lives, and there is hardly any aspect that remains unaffected by its advances. The vertical-transportation (VT) industry has always exemplified the adage, “be the change you want to see” and consistently triggered transformations in this sphere. As a result, elevators keep getting faster, easier and more manageable.

The theme for this issue — Focus on New and Emerging Technology — reflects that constant endeavor. The articles, authored by VT, architecture and real estate experts, highlight the relevance of the Internet of Things, AI, robots on the shop floor, digitization of various communication processes and more.

With structures rising higher and building management systems becoming increasingly complex in tandem, the role of VT has also seen significant evolution and expansion. Greater emphasis on technology-related aspects of real estate project planning and construction has also necessitated that VT brands develop and leverage technology to the maximum extent possible.

Since this issue marks the last quarter of 2021, an effort has been made to encapsulate the journey of the VT industry and those associated with it. During a year that can be best described as a rollercoaster ride, several “one-time use only” innovations were witnessed. The pandemic induced a “new normal” that necessitated out-of-the-box strategies, unofficially referred to as “jugaad” technology.

During the lockdowns, mechanics had to devise novel solutions to facilitate vertical mobility for senior citizens in need of medical treatment. Some of them even smartly adapted conventional electric light switches as a temporary quick-fix replacement for non-functioning elevator call buttons. As 2022 approaches, we hope to avoid a recurrence of such situations.

At an industry level, we need to start contemplating what lies ahead and examine the growing demand potential from segments like infrastructure, redevelopment, upgradation and low-rise bungalows and row houses in greater detail.

Going forward, there is much that can be accomplished and, when it comes to elevating the future of VT in India, not even the sky is the limit!
