A US$320-million, 15-year overhaul of the Eiffel Tower in Paris will include its elevator system, part of which includes original 1880s components, ArchDaily reported. Otis elevators were used on the north and south pillars, with French elevators serving the others, and a hydraulic elevator completing the journey to the top (ELEVATOR WORLD, April 2009). Approximately US$21 million a year will be spent on upgrades to security, efficiency and visitor comfort. Paris officials made the announcement as the city prepares to bid for the 2024 Olympic Games and the Universal Exhibition in 2025.
