In a major move toward empowering women in the real estate sector, the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), under the leadership of newly appointed President Rajan Bandelkar, established NAREDCO MAHI, the women’s arm of the real estate body. Durga Shanker Mishra, secretary of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, was the chief guest at the launch and first panel discussion under NAREDCO MAHI, “Women in the Real Estate Sector,” held by founders and members on September 24.

During the panel discussion, it was mentioned that NAREDCO MAHI will initially focus on providing access to opportunities for women entrepreneurs, facilitate direct interaction with policymakers, create networking opportunities with major corporate players in the Indian real estate industry and help women form close links with the government.

In its aim to empower female entrepreneurs and encourage participation of women in the real estate sector and allied fields, NAREDCO MAHI will strive to create an environment where women in real estate can come together, share experiences, harness their skills, draw on their resources, influence one another, grow and bring about lasting change. NAREDCO MAHI will aim to ensure active engagement of members with other stakeholders in the sector and work toward development and growth of the sector, with due recognition for the contribution of women in India’s real estate journey.

“Now you are bringing a new force,” Mishra said, commending NAREDCO on the development. “This will increase your strength two-fold.” He added that all initiatives under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs are focused on empowering women.

Speaking about major changes in the Indian real estate sector, he said that the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act has brought about confidence for the sector. “There is going to be great development in the real estate front in the country,” he said. “A lot of young management professionals are now entering the sector, and more women should follow suit.”

As for potential opportunities, he said that, in the next 30 years, urbanization, construction and infrastructure development will see great growth. This will mean a great need for skilled people.

Rajan Bandelkar, president, NAREDCO India, said:

“We will strive to mobilize women power at NAREDCO MAHI this year and garner more visibility for the organization. The initiative comes at a crucial time, as it promises to help more and more women entrepreneurs shed the impact of the pandemic and support economic recovery. Members of the newly formed women’s arm are likely to realize unparalleled business growth.”

Better gender diversity and representation would not only unlock several opportunities for Indian women, but will also accelerate our great country’s growth momentum and help in achieving the target for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.”

— NAREDCO MAHI President Tara Subramaniam

Tara Subramaniam, founder/president, NAREDCO MAHI, acknowledged the efforts of NAREDCO toward empowering women entrepreneurs in the sector. “Better gender diversity and representation would not only unlock several opportunities for Indian women, but will also accelerate our great country’s growth momentum and help in achieving the target for an Atmanirbhar Bharat,” she said.

Activities of the newly formed arm will range from mentoring, networking and access to capital for women entrepreneurs to inspirational talks from women in the real estate sector and their journeys. NAREDCO MAHI members will have access to exclusive training programs and opportunities to sharpen their presentation and business skills, along with networking opportunities.

The move is part of NAREDCO’s continuous efforts to support women entrepreneurs. It acknowledges that such moves are not just for empowering a significant portion of the population. As history shows, women have always played a crucial role in every aspect of Indian society, and this move will only propel their greatness.

What’s in a Name?

MAHI is not an acronym. NAREDCO MAHI, the women’s wing of NAREDCO, is named after the Mahi River, one of India’s major west-flowing rivers. All great civilizations are established at the banks of rivers that “keep flowing and nurture.” That was the approach the founders of NAREDCO MAHI took to naming their nascent organization, since, like a great river, women are strong, lifegiving and nurturing.
