Almost all the members of the National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) Safety Committee were present when it met for a day and a half in Secaucus, New Jersey, right before Christmas. The meeting was attended by Lou Deloreto (Otis), Dave Kobasic (ThyssenKrupp), Tim Daly (the National Elevator Industry Educational Program), Ivan Andrews (Mitsubishi), Nate Miller (KONE), Bill Driscoll (Schindler), Brian Black (NEII), your author (Elevator World, Inc.), Rob Merlo (the National Association of Elevator Contractors [NAEC]), Dave Smarte (NAEC) and guest Wayne Locker.
The primary business was to combine and simplify two competing sets of instructions regarding access to and egress from car tops with the 2010 Elevator Industry Field Employees’ Safety Handbook (effective since March 2010). These changes are reflected in red on the EW Safety site (safety.elevator-world.com) under “Safety Handbook.” The committee emphasized that nothing in either approach or within the handbook was unsafe, though simplification was needed. All NEII Safety Committee Position Papers were reviewed and approved. Training matrices were also approved, with one change. All of these are available at www.neii.org under the Safety Committee menu. OSHA citations and injuries were reviewed in closed session.
