We begin 2021 with the hope that we will soon be able to regain a sense of normalcy in our lives. As more and more COVID-19 vaccines get distributed around the world and the virus’ case numbers begin to dip, we can see a more normal life on the horizon. I know we all look forward to the day we can meet in person at an expo or conference and share a meal or two. That day is coming. But, for now, we must continue to be safe at work, in our communities, and at home.
In that vein, we decided to focus on Safety and Maintenance in this issue. Four fine articles look at various aspects of the topics:
- A Nudge in the Right Direction by Atif Bhanjee: The author cites many studies that confirm bright colors and images on escalator steps and handrails help passengers adhere to safety rules.
- Engineering for Safety by Muharrem B. Çakirer: The author proposes that cabin manufacturers also make the safety gear so the customer can find a single responsible entity.
- Escalator Fractal Behavior, Part One by Dr. Ali Albadri poses and answers the question, “Would the behavior of an escalator (as measured by smart step) change when there is passenger loading?”
- Hoist Rope Longevity by Fartash Razmjoo: The author discusses the many ways ropes can be monitored to ensure their proper care, lubrication and tension to avoid failure.
To celebrate the new year, we have eight winners of the 2021 Project of the Year Awards. As with many of the winners in the 22 previous contests, it is the challenge that often decides the victor. The winners span the world – from Hong Kong to Romania and from Spain and Australia.
In COVID-19 Impact, Outlook, we take a second look at the effects of COVID-19 on the industry. ELEVATOR WORLD Inc., the German elevator association VFA Interlift e.V. and fair organizer AFAG, in association with Credit Suisse, share survey results and analysis.
