Dear Readers,

You often read highly satisfactory technical articles in ELEVATOR WORLD Turkey but now, instead of a technical article, I would like to tell you a story. A fairy tale, actually. So, let’s start!

Once upon a time, people lived in happiness in a beautiful country ruled by a republican administration. One day, the elected consul acclaimed himself as the emperor like in Rome and started ruling the country alone with only the big boys with him. The majority of the people were uncomfortable with it, but nothing changed.

This king had new buildings constructed within the country. The whole country made a living from the construction business. The buildings were all constructed by the same people, and these people purchased construction materials from the suppliers. Some of these suppliers were local ones, while some of them were not from the kingdom. The king summoned consultants to inspect the constructions, and have buildings that are suitable for the use of the public. The duty of these scholars was to give advices based on their experience so that buildings would be safer and more comfortable. The majority of these scholars were experienced people who gave recommendations to many works and also in many countries. On the other hand, some of them were quack scholars who, instead of giving sound advice, did things differently. For example, merchants working with construction material suppliers gave recommendations. In this way, both the merchant and the supplier, by selling his products, earned money. For these merchants, selling the products of his boss was more important than the quality and the safety of the buildings. However, there were lots of master builders who were not aware of such tricks and took advice from such people. As a result, many accidents, some of which resulted in deaths, occurred in these buildings. Another quack scholar, despite not being competent to give recommendations, gave advice by using what he learned from the merchants and through some viziers of the king. As a result, he made money through the suppliers and enjoyed himself. He made a fortune by this way. He had no assistants and he was not able to make any calculation. As the country was frequently hit by the earthquakes, the king wanted earthquake-resistant buildings.  This quack set up some rules about earthquakes even though he knew nothing about it, other than that based on what the merchants told him. However, neither builders nor the others understood these rules, and they constructed buildings in their own way. Oddly enough, the king’s construction consultant could not figure it out, either.

While the kingdom was surrounded by such buildings, the economy was not doing well. The King gave permission to the sale of these buildings to foreigners and foreign merchants in order to bring foreign gold to the country and to enrich it. First, the rich nobles of the nearby poor kingdoms came to the country and started to buy houses. Thousands of houses were sold each year and thousands worth of gold were brought to the treasury. The king, who was not satisfied with all this, asked the wealthy merchants of rich countries to come to his country and open offices there. The delegates of the king went all around and informed wealthy merchants about the invitation of the king. They accepted the invitation but quickly realized that these buildings we badly built and they left the country without buying any estate. The king was very angry because nothing was sold to the wealthy merchants of the rich countries, despite all this effort.

He immediately called up the constructers and asked them to book. All of the constructors told the same thing: They did what the scholars told them with the permission of the King, but the buildings became unadmired and, perhaps, unsafe. Then the king invited lots of famous scholars from all over the world and told them to control these buildings. These scholars explained to the King the mistakes of these two quacks and the other imposters like them. In the end, the damage was done. All unsaleable buildings were sold or rented to the wealthy people in the kingdom. The king had these dishonest scholars beheaded and transferred their goods to his treasury. And the tale ended.

Do you think it is just a tale or a lie?

Do you?

Be safe and healthy.
