“You’re either part of the problem or part of the solution.” This dialogue, casually delivered by actor Robert De Niro to Natascha McElhone in the movie Ronin, seems apt while considering the low levels of safety awareness relating to vertical-transportation (VT) usage in India.
An ideal world scenario with VT-linked accident-free years has become a given on wish lists. Some believe this is because the number of such incidents and casualties seems to grow higher each time the calendar changes.
So, how does one fulfill a New Year’s resolution to raise awareness levels about giving safety priority while traveling by elevators and escalators? Well, the ELEVATOR WORLD India team decided to start things off by making this topic and its related aspects the content theme for the first issue of 2024.
The articles emphasize the evolving roles and linkages redefining VT with a focus on how integration, access and safety have become even more significant. Exemplifying the adage that change is the only constant, the goal is to make an impact by highlighting ways to enhance VT-usage safety during 2024.
While taking this issue from concept to creation, we ensured that the content comprised not just insights from our existing contributors — leading VT industry representatives — but also perspectives from several global brands that are all set to enter the Indian market.
In fact, the content has articles underlining the need for enabling mobility to a greater extent across India, coupled with easier access to buildings and their VT facilities. Reflecting upon these developments, it becomes evident that the quest for transformation has already commenced, and it is moving forward at an accelerated pace.
On a more practical note, members of the VT industry and its related sectors can make a tangible difference by participating in the Elevator Safety Run through physical and virtual run formats. To be held on March 2 in Bangalore during Smart Lift and Mobility (SLM) World 2024, this is a “global first” initiative being organized by Virgo Communications & Exhibitions in association with EW.
As always, the calendar year beginning provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on what has passed by while strategizing on innovative ways to improve what lies ahead. Do write to us with your achievements, aspirations and future plans!
