ZHA’s “Masterpiece” With Otis Atrium Elevators Debuts in Macau
Aug 1, 2018
Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) celebrated the opening of the 40-story Morpheus hotel in Macau (ELEVATOR WORLD, June 2014) on June 15. Part of the City of Dreams resort, the structure consists of a pair of towers connected at ground and roof levels with a central atrium containing 12 glass elevators by Otis Hong Kong that provide views of the hotel’s interior and exterior. Inspired by traditional Chinese jade carving, Morpheus is the world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton, according to ZHA.
Project Director Viviana Muscettola said its design evolved from unique site conditions. ZHA continued:
“Morpheus draws on ZHA’s 40 years of research into the integration of interior and exterior, civic and private, solid and void, Cartesian and Einsteinian. Space is woven within structure to tie disparate programs together and constantly make connections.”
