A recent Comic Book Resources article pointed out an interesting commonality in some of the most memorable scenes in the Star Wars movies — they all take place in an elevator. Blake Hawkins, who wrote the article and an undergraduate thesis on another Star Wars-related topic, breaks down the iconic elevator scenes into two categories: those that show humor and those that reveal true feelings.
First, on the comedic side, a scene in the opening minutes of Attack of the Clones in which Obi-Wan poked fun at Anakin’s nerves while they were in a lift reporting as Senator Amidala’s security detail. A second elevator scene between these two characters took place in Revenge of the Sith as master and apprentice realized only after the door closed that there were a bevy of battle droids inside.
Other scenes featuring galactic vertical transportation (VT) were more serious. For example, in Return of the Jedi when Darth Vader was taking Luke to see Emperor Palpatine, nothing was said, but a tension was felt as Luke remained hopeful that Vader could still be Anakin despite his denials. In a similar scenario in The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren and Rey discuss their future working together. They aren’t on the same page, however; Rey thought Kylo would turn to the light, and he thought the opposite would happen.
Your author would not necessarily claim to be a true fan of the Star Wars franchise — but as an admirer of elevators, the thought of VT in this sci-fi universe is intriguing!
