It’s not every day that you see a fully functioning, mechanical elevator that is small enough to fit inside your office. Enter the Mini Elevator, a 3D model made from recycled materials and stainless steel. At 86 in. high, 24 in. long and weighing 250 lb., it is about a sixth of the size of a real elevator. It even plays elevator music!
“The builder, a company called Ametal, had the elevator on display at an international event,” says T. Bruce MacKinnon, president of Elevator World. “I told our partner in Turkey, Bülent that I thought it was really cool. We formed a partnership with Ametal where they let us be a global representative. They sell them in Turkey, and we sell them everywhere else.”
Besides being fun and entertaining, the Mini Elevator provides a visible display of the inner workings of a real elevator, making it the perfect tool for demonstrating how life-sized elevators work. This model has even been sold to colleges to use in their training programs.
“Some of the parts, like the motor and controller, are made by a company that makes an actual controller and motor. They just made it in that small of a ratio to make this thing work, which is kind of cool,” says MacKinnon. “We always have people joking, saying, ‘You’re Elevator World, where’s the elevator?’. Now we have an elevator and it’s pretty neat to use as a visual for someone who doesn’t know about elevators.”
