During the August 23rd meeting of the Montgomery County Commission in Montgomery, Alabama, the Montgomery County Historical Society asked the commission for assistance in funding the addition of an outside elevator to the “Figh Pickett House,” The Montgomery Independent reports. The estimated cost of the elevator is between US$250,000 and US$300,000.The house is the oldest brick building in Montgomery and was first built in 1837. The historical society wants to create a tourist attraction, but the elevator is needed as state law requires both floors to be handicapped accessible in order to become a commercial site. While the commission as a whole did not make a commitment, Commissioner Isaiah Sankey told the historical society officials that he would use part of his designated funds to contribute to the purchase of the elevator, according to the source.
