Authorities in Chongqing, China, plan to install or upgrade more than 2,500 elevators in 2026 to address mobility challenges, particularly for elderly residents living in the city's hilly areas, iChongqing reports. The city in Southwest-Central China has many hillside communities, including Hongxingtingpo in the Yuzhong District with a maximum elevation of 30 m and long flights of stairs that exceed 50 steps. For this community, where most of the 533 residents are senior citizens, the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development installed five elevators, raised three sections of steps and built two pedestrian pathways. To date, Chongqing has modernized more than 7,000 and installed 7,900 elevators in residential communities as part of a CNY93.6 billion (US$13 billion) program.
