A fall down an out-of-order escalator linking a shopping center and a transit hub in South Yorkshire, U.K., on November 10 resulted in the hospitalization of one person, The Star reports. The incident happened only days after safety concerns were raised about litter on the unit — including drink cans and food wrappers — creating tripping hazards. The escalator has been out of service for weeks, but is still available for shoppers to use as stairs. The source interviewed users who said with Christmas coming, foot traffic, and in turn trip hazards, will increase. Solutions include erecting caution signage or a barrier preventing use, and/or cleaning the unit, they said. In response to concerns about safety, a spokesperson for the transit hub said the escalator underwent routine servicing in mid-October, during which time engineers identified components that needed repair. Until repairs are made, “the escalator will remain stationary and available for use as steps to ensure continued public access,” the spokesperson said.
