FATAL MBTA ESCALATOR ACCIDENT BACK IN THE NEWS AMID PROBE

New surveillance footage showing a 40-year-old man falling and becoming caught in a Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) escalator outside of Boston has the fatal incident back in the news as experts and the victim’s family ask why it took MBTA more than 22 min to make contact with the man, outlets including New York Post report. On the early morning of February 27, the man lost his balance and fell at the bottom a still-moving down escalator. His clothing became caught in the machinery, and first responders found him with his throat constricted. He died 10 days later at a local hospital. Approximately 12 people can be seen walking past the man and not stopping before a passerby calls 911 roughly 18 minutes later, which summoned MBTA personnel. A spokesperson for the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said an investigation into the death is ongoing. Describing the incident as “a terrible accident,” MBTA said its personnel “responds swiftly to all emergencies and does everything they can to assist individuals and secure the situation.”
