In a move aimed at public safety, Nagoya, Japan, has enforced a ban on walking on escalators, NDTV World was among outlets to report. The ordinance – the second of its kind in the country — requires people to stand still, rather than walk, on escalators in public places. The ruling comes after several incidents of passengers losing their balance and knocking over others, as well as accidents involving commuters running up and down escalators. Moving riders also create hazards for those with disabilities or injuries who use crutches or canes. There are no penalties for breaking the rule. However, the city of Nagoya has posted messages emphasizing passengers’ “duty” to stop moving, regardless of which side of the escalator they are using. In 2021, Saitama Prefecture became the first city in Japan to prohibit movement while riding escalators.
