Following a three-month closure, the escalator at the Alipore foot overbridge (FOB) in Kolkata, India, reopened April 11, the Times of India reports. The escalator was inspected prior to opening by a joint team from Kolkata Municipal Co. (KMC), Kolkata Police and the private agency that implemented the project. The agency will provide a structural fitness certificate to KMC after a survey conducted by an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur engineer. The police have proposed that a second FOB be set up near the Alipore aquarium to help handle crowds from the popular attraction. According to a KMC official, the mayor’s office has instructed the KMC to break ties with agencies and shut FOBs where escalators aren’t working.
