Network Rail, the U.K.’s main railway infrastructure owner and manager, has tapped KONE to modernize 14 escalators serving major stations on the Merseyrail network in Liverpool, KONE announced on April 4. Scheduled for completion in late 2026, work comprises full replacement of 40- to 50-year-old units with the energy-efficient KONE EcoModTM solution with the ability to transport up to 7,300 passengers per hour. Designed and manufactured to Network Rail specifications, the escalators will move people throughout major stations, including Lime Street, Hamilton Square and James Street. With KONE’s “extensive expertise in escalator modernization,” the team is prepared to successfully handle the complex modernization project, said KONE Executive Vice President Europe Nicolas Alchal. The developer is Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd., and the technical consultant is TÜV SÜD.
