More than 90% of the components and parts used in elevators and escalators in Iran are domestically made, Lift and Escalator Component Manufacturers Association of Iran (LIEMA) Head Samad Shafahi said during the 13th Iran LIFTEX Tehran that kicked off on July 10, Tehran Times reports. For vertical-transportation (VT) equipment such as elevators serving petrochemical plants and refineries — accounting for up to 2% of the units nationwide — components are imported, he said. More than 50,000 elevators and 1,200 escalators are built in Iran annually, “all of which are produced with the efforts of domestic manufacturers,” Shafahi observed, adding there are more than 500 production facilities in the country, of which 350 are LIEMA members. Further describing the VT industry’s economic impact, he said it employs more than 80,000 people, 30,000 of whom are directly involved in production.
