National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) Executive Director Amy Blankenbiller and Vice President of Government Affairs Philip Grone met with International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) General President Frank Christensen, IUEC General Secretary-Treasurer Larry McGann and Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund (EIWPF) National Director Allen Spears in mid-February to sign the industry’s updated Model Elevator Law (MEL). Created in partnership between NEII and IUEC, the MEL is a document establishing the parameters of a comprehensive elevator program in a jurisdiction. NEII asserts that a comprehensive elevator program is a designated program that manages equipment and regulation, has an elevator safety board, requires contractor licensure beyond a general business license, handles mechanic licensure and apprenticeship permits, as well as inspector licensure and safety reporting. Most states have elements of a comprehensive elevator program, but the complete MEL has been implemented in only four states, so there is work to do to achieve greater adoption, Blankenbiller observed. — reported by NEII
