Officials in Shimla, India, have created the site Smart City Mission as a center for solar energy at government buildings that includes operation of elevators and escalators, The Statesman reports. An official said that the Smart City Mission has put forward a successful model of solar energy, which has been installed across Shimla, the results of which are significant cost saving in the area. The first solar power system under Smart City Mission was installed in the area in 2019, and these systems have now been installed in 66 government buildings, increasing power in the area while cutting costs. Officials vocalized emphasis on green energy, especially solar energy that is seen as the future of smart cities. One important target is to install a solar power system to link elevators and escalators. Officials have been asked to explore the possibility of an escalator in ongoing construction of a foot-overbridge. The possibility of installing a solar power plant is being explored to reduce the power on such projects and make them more viable.
