SL Green Realty Corp., Manhattan’s largest office landlord, received the 2021 Urban Land Institute (ULI) New York Award for Excellence in Development for the NYC Midtown East supertall One Vanderbilt in the “Office Development” category, SL Green announced on November 5. Served by a Schindler vertical-transportation system, the 1,401-ft-tall, 1.7-million-ftOne Vanderbilt was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). More than 91% leased, the tower boasts the recently opened SUMMIT One Vanderbilt observatory, an attraction that includes an all-glass elevator system called Ascent that travels up the outside of the building, providing “breathtaking” views. Cimolai Technology SpA of Italy manufactured Ascent’s rack-and-pinion system and Wittur designed its cabs. For the award, ULI recognized the supertall for its “vital role in the revitalization of East Midtown, providing a new model for delivering transportation and public-realm improvements through public-private partnerships and the implementation of US$17 million in sustainability features above and beyond those required under city construction codes.” Construction of One Vanderbilt resulted in improvements to Grand Central Terminal and to public accessibility.
