A style collaboration by designers Snøhetta and Hassell has been awarded for an international design excellence competition that will result in the transformation of Harbourside in Darling Harbour into a new, inviting destination in the heart of Sydney, Snøhetta reports. The project, by property developer Mirvac, will create one of Australia’s most sustainable precincts. Included will be the Harbourside retail center stretching over 240 m of water frontage within Sydney’s iconic Darling Harbour area. The mixed-use redevelopment of the site will deliver a shopping, hospitality and entertainment destination, along with a 42-story, high-end residential tower. Once it wins government approval, Harbourside will include about 24,000 m2 of office space, 7,000 m2 of retail and 350 apartments. The project will also offer 10,000 m2 of public space, including a proposed 3,500 m2 square and a widened waterfront promenade area. Mirvac also plans for Harbourside to earn Green Star and WELL ratings as a net-carbon positive project. Work on the AUD2-billion (US$1.45-billion) project is expected to begin in 2023.
