Resort Elevator Crash in Bali Results in Deaths

Five people were killed after an elevator at a resort hotel crashed on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali on September 1, local police said, XINHAUNET reports. The accident took place in Ubud, a tourism village in the district of Gianyar. Reports say that five hotel staff entered the elevator — a bridge elevator made of steel with an elevator tube — to go up when the belt broke, and it fell approximately 100 m, killing the passengers. Officials theorize that the steel track was not strong enough to pull the heavy load, and a steel ceiling rope used to pull the elevator tube broke, resulting in the elevator sliding down at a high speed. Police officials said that officers have registered the case and ordered an investigation.
