A 1960s-era, 31-story commercial tower designed by Charles Luckman (architect of landmarks including Madison Square Garden) atop Pennsylvania Station at 2 Penn Plaza in Midtown Manhattan is getting an extreme makeover, and vertical transportation (VT) is no small part of it. Schindler tells ELEVATOR WORLD it is modernizing 22 passenger and two service elevators and installing two escalators and three hydraulic elevators at PENN 2. Involving full re-cladding and interior modernization, the renovation was designed by MdsAS Architects and is being developed by Vornado Realty Trust, New York YIMBY reports. The VT package includes upgrading 16 passenger elevators with PORT destination dispatch and TXR5 controllers, raising six passenger and two service units three landings and upgrading them with TXR5 controllers and PORT, installing two 9300 escalators and installing one POH and two 330A hydraulic elevators. Part of the 10-skyscraper Penn District revitalization plan, work on PENN 2 includes extensive subterranean improvements, and is slated for completion sometime in 2023, according to YIMBY.
