Student Athlete Killed in Elevator Collapse in Atlanta

A student athlete died on August 31 when he was crushed by an apartment elevator in Atlanta, CBS46 reports. He and two other football players boarded the elevator on an upper floor of the building. The elevator began to fall but stopped, and the door opened on the third floor. Two of the three players exited the elevator, but as the third player was leaving the car, it began free-falling, trapping the student between the elevator car and the shaft for almost an hour. Fire and rescue personnel and police officers freed the student, but his school confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries. According to a photo of the elevator’s inspection certificate, the last inspection took place in August 2019 and the next one was supposed to take place in August 2020. An investigation is ongoing.
