Staff at McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS)  in Blount County, Tennessee, just south of Knoxville, are working to minimize impact on passengers as KONE replaces the facility’s two escalators over the next 16 weeks, The Daily Times reports. The “down” escalator is currently running and the “up” escalator is cordoned off behind screens as it undergoes replacement. Signage directs passengers to alternate routes. The goal is to have the “up” escalator replaced by October, then replace the ”down” escalator. Installed in 2000, the escalators have been used by more than 30 million people each year and have reached the end of their useful life,  according to TYS, which awarded a US$1.1-million replacement contract to KONE early this year.
