TKE Completes Two-Year Elevator Modernization at Carlsbad Caverns

Carlsbad Caverns Park, New Mexico

TK Elevator (TKE) announced on July 30 it has completed a two-year elevator modernization at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico that added two new traction elevators to transport visitors nearly 750 ft below the surface. The units traverse the distance — roughly the height of the Hoover Dam — at 700 ft/min. Welcoming nearly 500,000 visitors annually, Carlsbad Caverns consists of more than 100 limestone caves, making it a site of scientific and public interest. One of the early elevator systems, installed in 1955, required frequent repair and modernization to maintain safe and convenient travel. The revamped system includes modernized hoistway divider beams, rails, machines, cables, car slings and elevator roofs. System designers used galvanized and stainless steel to ensure durability and corrosion resistance for a reliable and long-lasting elevator system.
