Six tourists stranded underground at Grand Canyon Caverns in Peach Springs, Arizona, when an elevator malfunctioned on October 23 have now been brought back to the surface, CNN is among outlets to report. The people trapped underground at the site, which allows visitors to dine and stay in a hotel in an ancient underground cave, were a family of four and another couple. Local firefighters helped the family up approximately 21 flights of stairs on October 23, but the couple waited until the elevator was operational again on October 24 to come to the surface. A local sheriff’s office spokesman said a “mechanical problem” caused the elevator malfunction.
