TSSA Imposing Penalties for Elevating Devices

Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Ontario, Canada’s public safety regulator, will impose administrative penalties for certain issues with residential elevating devices starting on June 9. The penalties apply to specific non-compliances related to passenger elevators in residential buildings, including rental buildings, condominiums, long-term care facilities and student residences. Penalties will be imposed when a business or individual fails to comply with certain safety requirements of Ontario Regulation 209/01: Elevating Devices, including reporting accidents involving death or injury, allowing only TSSA-registered contractors to perform alterations and employing only TSSA-registered contractors. Penalty amounts for each violation range from CAD1,000 (US$715) to CAD5,000 (US$3,578). Further information can be found here.
