The Construction Sector Report 2024, which contains the most up-to-date and fundamental information on the sector, from production to employment, exports to imports and sheds light on all activities over the past year, has been published.

submitted by İMSAD

Since its establishment, Association of Turkish Construction Material Producers (İMSAD), which has undertaken many important activities for the development of the construction sector, operates with a membership structure consisting of 85 large companies, 60 associations, five universities, and one union that make up the construction materials industry. The eighth edition of the report, which has been prepared regularly every year since 2017, was published in 2025. The Türkiye İMSAD Construction Sector Report 2024, which contains the most up-to-date and fundamental information about our country, the global economy, the construction sector and the construction materials industry, presents important data.

The construction materials sector in Türkiye is striving to meet strong domestic demand through post-earthquake reconstruction projects and urban transformation initiatives following the 2023 earthquake. Fluctuations in exchange rates, rising raw material and energy costs and changes in credit interest rates have directly impacted the construction materials sector, leading to slowdowns in the housing sector. Türkiye is one of the world's leading producers of cement, ceramics, iron and steel and glass, which are among the most important products of the Turkish construction materials sector. In order to remain competitive in the world's largest construction materials markets, sustainable production and green building practices must come to the fore.

In the report, where data is shared in eight separate sections, elevators and escalators are included under the heading Electrical Materials and Equipment.

Elevators, Escalators and Boarding Bridges

Elevators, escalators and conveyors, which are considered construction materials, include electric and non-electric elevators, skip hoists, escalators, moving walkways and passenger boarding bridges used at airports. The number of companies manufacturing elevators, escalators and moving walkways in Türkiye, along with production indicators, are presented in the tables below. According to these, as of 2024, there are 99 companies manufacturing elevators and 10 companies manufacturing escalators.

There are two companies. Production data is calculated and shared in units. According to Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK data, elevator production declined in 2024. In 2024, 57,568 elevators were produced. The number of escalators produced has not been disclosed by TÜİK.

Foreign Trade

Turkey's foreign trade in elevators, escalators and elevators is evaluated together. Accordingly, exports of elevators, escalators and elevators decreased in terms of both quantity and value in 2024. Exports amounted to 45,680 t worth US$182 million.

Türkiye's imports of elevators escalators, and airlocks increased in 2024, reaching US$117.9 million. Imports increased in volume, reaching 25,653 t.

Our Export Markets and Importing Countries

Türkiye exports most of its elevators, escalators and moving walkways to neighboring and nearby countries. Russia was the top export destination in 2024. Exports to Russia fell by 30.9% compared to last year, reaching US$43.2 million. Exports to Algeria, which ranked second, increased to US$24.9 million. Following these two countries, the countries with the highest exports are Ukraine, Georgia, Nigeria, Iraq, U.A.E., Kosovo, Iran and Greece.

Türkiye imports the most elevators, escalators and conveyors from China. Imports from China declined in 2023, as they did in 2022. However, there was a significant increase in 2024, reaching US$95.6 million. After China, the largest imports came from Italy, amounting to US$3.7 million. Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Slovakia, Switzerland and Finland followed.

Our Share and Ranking in World Trade

The value of global elevator, escalator and moving walkway exports was US$8.45 billion in 2023. Global exports have increased for three consecutive years since 2020. Mega projects in developing countries have led to an increase in global exports. Türkiye increased its exports and its share in global elevator, escalator, and elevator door exports. However, by 2024, Türkiye's exports had declined slightly to US$182.4 million.

China ranks first in the world in elevator, escalator and conveyor belt exports. China accounts for 34% of global exports with US$2.59 billion in exports. In 2024, the top 10 countries in terms of exports remained the same, but the rankings of some countries changed. Türkiye fell from ninth place in 2023 to 10th place in 2024.

The U.K. ranked first in global elevator, escalator and moving walkway imports, as it did in 2023. The U.K.'s imports increased by 14.7% compared to last year, reaching US$421.6 . The second-largest importer in 2024 is Canada, followed by France in third place. Other countries in the top 10 importers are the U.S., U.A.E., Germany, Russia and the Netherlands. Despite embargoes and restrictions, Russia remains among the top 10 countries. Türkiye ranked 17th in 2024.

In conclusion, when compared to the 2023 report published last year, a decline in both export and import figures is observed. Turkey, which ranked ninth in the previous world elevator, escalator  and conveyor exporters ranking, has dropped to 10th place, swapping places with France.
