VT Part of US$500-Million Redevelopment of One Times Square

An Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant elevator at the Times Square shuttle station is part of the US$500-million redevelopment of NYC’s iconic One Times Square — site of the New Year’s Eve ball drop — announced by developer Jamestown LP and Mayor Eric Adams in May. Jamestown tells ELEVATOR WORLD another 12 elevators will be added to the existing vertical-transportation (VT) system. The general contractor is AECOM Tishman, and Schindler is handling the VT portion. Scheduled for completion in summer 2024, the redevelopment will transform the 26-story, 118-year-old tower into a modern visitor center with a new viewing deck and augmented reality/virtual reality museum experience, according to Jamestown. The interior of the former home of The New York Times, acquired by Jamestown in 1997, will be open to the public for the first time in decades. Interactive experiences will span 12 floors while the viewing deck will provide an elevated view of Times Square.
