New escalators at a “once-notorious” crossing gate at a key railway junction in India’s Maharashtra state are among safety measures that helped Central Railways’ (CR) Mumbai division achieve zero fatalities at the junction — Diva — in the nearly seven months following the first eight months of 2023, The Free Press Journal is among outlets to report. In the first eight months of last year, the crossing saw 24 fatalities and three injuries, while in 2022, a total of 26 people died and five were injured. In response, CR embarked on a comprehensive safety strategy that, in addition to new escalators at both ends of the foot overbridge near the level crossing, includes barbed wire to dissuade commuters from passing under the gate and security personnel. A CR official said a road overbridge linking east and west Diva that will result in the permanent closure of the crossing gate is being built.
