Dear Readers of Elevator World Turkey,

Because of COVID-19 which emerged in Wuhan, China, at the end of the last year and has affected the whole world, most of the events planned for 2020 were postponed to autumn or 2021. WEE Expo China, which was scheduled for May, was rescheduled to August. Taking place during the pandemic, when it lost its influence relatively, the WEE Expo was the first exhibition in this period. The event, monitored by Elevator World China Correspondent Peng Jie, did not receive a large participation. You may read the detailed article about this event in this issue.

The winners of the annual Photo Contest organized by Elevator World have been announced. The eighth annual contest yielded amusing and new categories.  The winners of this year’s contest, where approximately 300 entries in ten categories were received, were chosen with your votes. This year, for the first time, one of the entries from our country has been awarded. The photo, taken by the Turkey Lift and Escalator Industry Women’s Business Association (AYSKAD) at the Bosphorus, with the female technicians of the future, was chosen the first-place winner in the “Who Reads EW” category. In this issue, you may enjoy all of the contest’s top-ranking entries.

The Turkey Elevator Industrialists Federation (Turkey ASFED), which adjourned its regular bimonthly board meetings due to the pandemic, met in Kayseri on September 4, 2020, and met with sector representatives from Kayseri at an event hosted by the Kayseri Elevator and Escalator Industrialists Association (KAYSAD). Based on the protocol signed between Turkey ASFED and the Ministry of National Education, and the decision taken for opening elevator department at vocational and technical high schools, the third Elevator Academy, which is Kayseri Elevator Academy, has been opened in the new academic year, as promised. The hands-on workshop prepared by ASFED at Kocasinan Ayşe Baldöktü Vocational Training Center, meant to contribute to the employment of intermediate staff highly needed by the industry, is praiseworthy.

In each issue, we are doing our best to inform you about new projects, maintenance activities and revisions in the industry. In our new issue, you may learn about the goods lifts and vehicle lifts in Arter, the new building constructed by Vehbi Koç Foundation in Dolapdere and provided by Pera Mühendislik, and about the revision of 24 elevators in only six days by Cersan Elevator, when the Marmara University Başıbüyük Pandemic Hospital was urgently put into service.

The theme we have focused in this issue is the Safety Components that maintain the safety of the elevators. While Tricia Derwinsky from Otis tells us about the safety components of an elevator, our other authors gave us technical details. I would like to thank all of our authors for their precious efforts.

Stay healthy and enjoy reading,
