Even More to See at the Empire State Building

Otis has been the vertical-transportation supplier for the iconic building throughout Empire State’s nearly 90-year history. A video in this replica of the cab reflects that, and the original mechanical relays spark vividly as they open and close.

Otis earned the modernization contract for the Empire State Building’s elevators in 2011 and installed a Gen2 unit with glass at the topmost travel (between the 86th and 102nd floors) to the observation deck. When speaking with Otis General Manager, Manhattan New Equipment John

Corey (p. 114), EW Senior Associate Editor Lee Freeland learned the building had recently opened an exhibit featuring the original Otis equipment. It was so popular among fellow visitors that it was hard to get these clear shots!

“It’s a very big challenge to maintain” the 73 Otis elevators (with three new Gen2s installed in 2011) and eight Otis escalators in the building, Corey said.
