From Strength to Strength

Sales grow for CP Automation following its acquisition of Magnetek.

In July 2020, drives, automation and power quality specialist CP Automation acquired Magnetek Elevator UK, formerly part of the Columbus McKinnon Corporation. Over the course of the past twelve months or so, the transition has been so smooth that the acquisition is still one of the elevator industry’s best kept secrets and CP Automation recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its dedicated elevator division.

As part of the transaction, CP Automation integrated the Magnetek UK Bedford office into its organisation and agreed to bring the Magnetek Elevator sales and support staff on board, ensuring a smooth transition for customers and employees.

The acquisition was an extension of an existing partnership with Magnetek that began in August 2017 and was part of CP Automation’s overall expansion strategy. This put CP Automation, which was founded in 2005, in a position to expand its elevator product lines and further develop its drive and motor repair service, as well as in-house and on-site support and training services in the EMEA market for new and existing customers. Over the course of the past year, the business has gone from strength to strength despite the challenging environment.

The company focuses on providing quality customer service while also keeping abreast of wider industry growth trends. In fact, the elevator sector is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 2.5% from 2021 to 2027, driven by the rise of urbanisation.

“Following trends and analysing the requirements of our sectors has ensured we are continuously adapting to meet the needs of existing customers and has also enabled us to expand our customer base,” explained Brian Preston, general manager of the elevator division at CP Automation. He added:

“We’re also witnessing a rising need for maintenance and modernisation of elevators, particularly in Europe. By offering a unique combination of drives, elevator-specific products and technical expertise, we are helping our customers to modernise outdated elevator technology, as well as capitalise on our energy-saving and power quality solutions in new installations.”

“Reflecting on the one-year milestone since the acquisition, we’ve come a long way,” added John Mitchell, global sales and marketing director at CP Automation. He said:

“By establishing our Bedford office as a Magnetek centre of excellence for the elevator and crane markets, we’ve been able to take a resource-focused approach. In April 2021, we also opened a new facility in Capendu, France, primarily to overcome some of the challenges presented by Brexit, but it has also paved the way for new opportunities in Europe.

“The successful integration within the business and our wider portfolio of products and services has definitely strengthened our elevator offering. Our people have also been key to ensuring a smooth transition. We pride ourselves on our technical expertise, and this is one of the reasons why we continue to succeed as a global business.”
