Investigation Finds Problems With Texas Elevator Safety

An investigation by Dallas news station WFAA found serious problems in Texas’ elevator safety program. The investigation revealed missed inspections, neglected elevators and poor recordkeeping for the state’s 40,000 passenger elevators. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation enforces the annual inspection requirement, but its data shows 14% of the state’s elevators are overdue for their annual inspections. The state’s elevator database also includes elevators that no longer exist. The investigation also found cases of inspectors faking inspections.
