TMMOB Chamber Of Mechanical Engineers Istanbul Branch held an online “Occupational Health and Safety Symposium” on May 21-22, 2021.
The Online Occupational Health and Safety Symposium was held on Zoom and opened with a welcome speech made by Ahmet Akçakaya, Istanbul Branch Board Member, followed by Yunus Yener, chairman of the chamber, who also spoke to the viewers.
“Occupational health and safety is one of our most important tasks”
TMMOB Chamber of Mechanical Engineers Istanbul Branch Yunus Yener made the opening speech of the Occupational Health and Safety Symposium held in İstanbul, and said that identifying the real reasons of occupational health and safety problems and developing health and safety measures for correct solutions were among the main duties of the Chamber.
Stating that one of the main tasks of the Chamber was to contribute the sector with development and improvement activities like they did in other areas of expertise, Yener added
“Due to the inadequacy or lack of Occupational Health and Safety measures, hundreds of thousands of our citizens have work accidents, thousands of our citizens die or get injured as a result of work accidents, and they have to face with incapacity, unemployment and more severe poverty conditions. Such class differences became more devastating due to the COVID-19 outbreak.”
“Occupational health and safety should not be limited with certain workplaces and the scope of the occupational health and safety law numbered 6331”
Yaner said,” During the pandemic, it has been proved that the approach we set forth about the Occupational Health and Safety issues was essential: Occupational Health and Safety should not be limited to certain workplaces and the scope of the Occupational Health and Safety Law numbered 6331. Occupational Health and Safety cannot be separated from fundamental social rights or workers or from humane working conditions, rights of working on fulltime and on a payroll basis, social security, organization, proper wages and retirement rights. Therefore, again we would like to state that this issue and all working life legislation should be rearranged in accordance with the principles of being a social state. It is what we struggle for.”
Eight sessions were held
The program started with the session, “COVID-19 as an Occupational Accident/Occupational Disease.” Other topics discussed were “Impacts of COVID-19 on the Working Class,”
“Impacts of Remote Working,” “Women’s Labor in Working Life during COVID-19,” “Spread of COVID-19 in Public Transport Vehicles/Shuttles,” “COVID Effect on Risk Analysis in the Workplace,” “Workplace Homicide during Pandemic” and “Employee Personal Rights Losses during COVID-19.”
