Twenty passengers, including children, were rescued from a stalled elevator at the 634-m Tokyo Skytree broadcasting tower and tourist attraction in the Sumida Ward of Tokyo, Japan, on February 22, outlets including Japan Today report. According to Tobu Tower Skytree Co., two elevators that travel between the fourth floor and the 350-m-high observation deck stopped at approximately 8:15 p.m. — an elevator carrying 20 passengers going down and an empty elevator going up. Taking approximately 5 h, the rescue involved a stainless-steel panel being placed between the two elevators so passengers could exit the stalled elevator from a side emergency door. No one was injured, and the attraction was to remain closed through February 24 as authorities investigate the cause and reinforce maintenance and safety-management systems.
